1.3 Politics in Canada
For most of the rest of Unit 1 we will be discussing politics and political parties in Canada. Part of your learning will be done independently as you research and learn about the various political parties in Canada and create political media that communicates their most important beliefs and promises for our upcoming election. Throughout the next 1.5 weeks I will also deliver various short lessons on politics in Canada and we will encounter various forms of media that try to give you some context with regards to how our parties are organized and what individuals believe. Unit 1 is an overview, so we will not go deep into the 'isms' , that will be more in Unit 2, but the lessons will be designed to give your some context as to what each party believes and how Canadian politics is organized (some might be a review for some of you, but new for others and either is fine).

Canadian Political Ideologies
To the right is a short video that further explains the structure of Canadian politics and the various political parties you will be studying. Everyone should watch the video, you need to have a broad understanding of ALL political parties, not just the one you are focused on.

Assignment Reflection - Part 1Visit the Voting Compass from CBC linked here and take the voting quiz. See what party you align with. Do you agree with this? Look at your classmates' TikToks, posters and videos and see if what you believe aligned with what they promoted from their parties. Who would you vote for? Why? Work on your reflection for your assignment after doing this.

Assignment Reflection Part 2
Add to what you have.
Tonight watch 30 min to 1 hour of election coverage (ideally after 8pm as that is when polls close). What channel did you watch? What did you think of the coverage? Was it fair? Who won (or is leading depending on mail in votes) and did you think they would win? What made or is making them successful? Where did the win? Was there any surprises.
Reflect on these questions tonight and be prepared to discuss tomorrow.
Read the article linked here that reviews the election results. Is this what you thought might happen? How do you feel?

For this assignment you will have 1 full class period and at home to complete it. It is due Monday. You will be assigned the test and then must hand the test in at the beginning of tomorrow's class. This is a test, but obviously collaboration is possible and is in many ways encouraged. Please view the rubric on the test to see how you will be evaluated. We will go through the test as a class before you begin. Good Luck.
