Assessments
Assessment FOR learning is more commonly known as formative & diagnostic assessments. Assessment FOR learning is the use of a task or an activity for the purpose of determining student progress during a unit or block of instruction. Teachers are now afforded the chance to adjust classroom instruction based upon the needs of the students. Similarly, students are provided valuable feedback on their own learning.
Assessment OF learning is the use of a task or an activity to measure, record and report on a student's level of achievement in regards to specific learning expectations. These are often known as summative assessments. (Evaluations Above)
Assessment AS learning is the use of a task or an activity to allow students the opportunity to use assessment to further their own learning. Self and peer assessments allow students to reflect on their own learning and identify areas of strength and need. These tasks offer students the chance to set their own personal goals and advocate for their own learning.
Important: Although only assessments of learning are graded formally, both assessments for and as learning are taken into account when determining your final grade. Determining a final grade does not simply involve a computer calculating numbers, it involves my professional judgement of your learning taking into account both your most recent and your most consistant performance. That means I monitor, record and assess you throughout the term and all of those conversations and your performance on tasks that are not 'formally evaluated' are taken into account when determining your final grade in the course.

Plagerism
All work that you submit must be your own. Plagiarism is a type of cheating and includes copying from your friends, classmates, the Internet, books, or any other source. If you don’t know if you are plagiarizing, ASK before handing-in an assignment. Cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated; any assignment that is flagged as plagiarism will receive a mark of 0. Depending on the severity of the infraction, further consequences may be applied.
Important Information
1. You need a notebook (ringed notebook) and a binder. As of right now there is no textbook for this class, but I have one that I will use to supplement material for you. You also must review the first page of this website by clicking on the International Business tab at the top and see the working course outline with assignments. I will update your grades periodically throughout the term and Maplewood will always be up to date; however, numbers are only part of grades. My professional judgement also counts. I will explain grading, rubrics and professional judgement in class.
2. Visit the website. We will be doing a lot of our work online and using a lot of links, videos, readings et. al. when going through the course. Try not to work ahead. I will be updating assignments and content throughout the course. Obviously some things will remain the same, while others will be changed or updated. All of this important information will be posted on the website.
3. Again...Do not work ahead. It is great that you are enthusiastic and that you want to get things done early, but there is a step - by - step process to the course and you will be given ample amount of time to finish assignments. Do not worry! I promise.
4. Read everything. If I give you a reading, you must read it. You must read it!! You must read it! Do not just simply try and skim to try and find answers. You will miss the point. Most of this course is critical thinking. You can't think critically if you are just looking for 'the answer'. In many cases there is more than one answer. I want to see how you can support your answers (opinions/arguments). Everyone has opinions, what evidence do you have to prove yours to be true?
5. I am often wrong. Its ok! I don't mind. Tell me! We can talk about it.
6. Sensitive Topics. There is a lot going on in the world right now and not all of it is easy to discuss. In 2022 we consume a vast amount of media from diverse sources; some sources that really are not so great and some that are well informed. This course will examine difficult topics like The Ukraine War and Covid - 19 restrictions, but not matter your opinion on these topics, its important that we discuss them openly and honestly. Problems get solved through discussion and discourse. That is what this course is about. So be honest, respectful and honest.

2. How does the justice system affect different groups of people within society? How do different groups of people encounter the justice system?
3. What is the role of international law? Who has the right to make decisions that affect diverse cultures and populations?
