Critical Race Theory
Critical Race Theory emphasizes that often "racism does not happen in explicit forms, rather it is more nuanced and subtle, and built into our structures." (Joshua) such as education, healthcare and media. Addiontally, racism is not always easy to spot, in fact racism is not just slurs and abuse hurled in the street like we think of. Rather, "racism is built into our structures and institutions, which is why we see system level disparities between BAME people and white people in many aspects of society." (ibid)
Read the rest of Joshua's article linked here. The examples used are in the UK but are very applicable to Canada. How can we tear down these socially constructed racist institutions and make them inclusive?
