The Dark Side of NGOs
Some of you may be thinking of doing a 'gap year' or travelling this summer and potentially looking at how you can help those in need around the world. Read about (linked here) and watch the video on orphanage tourism. What sorts of issues arise for the poor when business is involved? What are some solutions?
Human Rights Case Study: Hong Kong
Watch the video on Hong Kong's National Security Law. What Charter Rights does it violate? Visit this link to the Declaration of Human Rights from the United Nations. What rights does it violate?

Unit 4.2 The Environment
A) What are externalities? Watch the short economics video and learn what they are. What does it mean when they are not counted as a cost? How does this change the business model for a corporation?
B) Read the article linked here. How can carbon pricing address this? Why must this be an international agreement not just a national one? |
Read the article about COP26 linked here. What arguments have you heard before? Watch the following Netflix documentary on our effects on the enviroment. Who's responsibility is it to clean it up?
Sometimes Governments are not enough, and we need NGOs to step forward to help those around the world. Visit Greenpeace linked here and learn about one of the things they do. Be prepared to share it with the class. |

Together we will go through the debate assignment. You have already been assigned teams and a topic. Pay specific attention to the rubric and how you are evaluated.
Note: You may submit notes taken during the debate and notes complied before the debate to contribute to your mark, but this does not mean you may not speak during the debate, these are only additional to what you do during the debate and their consideration for marks could vary.
Note #2: Hand in a Works Cited Page (one per person) for additional marks.

Note the debate format. We will follow this structure, but it is important to note that: More than one person may (do not have to) speak during any round. That means you can break up the time so that one person does not need to speak for 5 minutes straight. All I ask is that everyone is given an opportunity to speak on your team. The speaking does not need to be equal, only the opportunity to speak does.
