Unit 1.1: Short Fiction/Grade 11 Review
1. Short Story Structure Review: Together we will review the structure of a story. If you have any questions be sure to ask! You need to understand this before we begin our first reading.
2. Literary Devices Review Quiz. Take the Quiz until you get to 1 million (feel free to work with your group) Note down the answers, then write their definitions. You must show me the definitions at the end of class. Lastly, be prepared to find these literary terms in the stories you are going to read.

Conventional wisdom is the body of ideas or explanations generally accepted as true by the public and/or by experts in a field.
Guiding Questions:

a) Individually Read the short fiction "Jubilee" by Kristin Valdez Quade and complete the guiding questions.
Guiding Questions: 1. Where is the story set and why is that important? 2. What is Andrea's father's profession? What does Andrea think about it? 3. Find one piece of imagery in the story and explain it. 4. Why does Matty introduce himself as Matthew? Explain. 5. Choose 2 symbols from the story and explain their meaning. 6. What is the theme of the story? What evidence do you have? 7. Does Andrea hate Parker/ the Lowells? Explain. 8. Does Andrea demonstrate unconscious bias toward's Parker? 9. What role does social status or class play in the story? Explain with examples. 10. Why is sex or sexuality important in the story? |
b) Group Discussions. Discuss the answers to the questions in your groups. Specifically be prepared to share your feelings about questions 7 - 10 with the group. You can have more than one opinion to share and some reasons for it.
c) Reader Response: Choose 2 questions from the reader response PowerPoint Slide 10 and write a one paragraph response to each question. I will ask for volunteers to share their responses, but you are not required to share with the entire group. |

a) Before you read: What do you think you know about Japanese culture? What bias or preconceived notions do you have? Write them down.
b) Watch the short film about Japanese culture below.
In your groups reflect on the film. What are your impressions of it? What are your feelings about the various discussions on dating?
c) Make connections in 1 or 2 paragraphs Answer the question(s): What aspects of Japanese culture is similar to yours? What aspects of Japanese culture is different from yours? Did your understanding of Japanese culture improve? Are there things you know about Japanese culture that are not discussed in the reading or video?

a) Individually Read the short fiction "Yesterday" by Haruki Murakami and complete the guiding questions. Note: We will take some time to listen to selections of the audiobook and discuss them in class. Guiding Questions: 1. Where is the story set and why is that important? 2. Where do the two boys meet? What information does this give us? 3. Find one piece of imagery in the story and explain it. 4. Find all the symbols for loneliness and list them. Explain each. 5. Choose 2 symbols from the story and explain their meaning. 6. What is the theme of the story? What evidence do you have? 7. In the story Kitaru says that Aki-kun is "too normal;" explain this and do you think someone can be too normal? Is this positive or negative? 8. What is the message from the author about sex and dating? 9. Explain the differences between Kitaru and Aki-kun. What does each represent and why do you think so? 10. Explain the relationship between Kitaru and Erika? 11. How do the boys view/treat Erika differently? 12. Explain the title of the story and the role the lyrics have in it. |

Inform me of which story you choose and why you chose it in order to be granted the permission to read and respond to it.

We will go through (fairly quickly) the essay process, though you should already have an idea of it prior to being in this class. For this essay we will go step-by-step; however, they will be quick steps, so make sure you keep up and do not miss class.
